Rug Gallery of handmade Persian Antique, Oriental, Contemporary New and Tribal Wool Rugs
Of all the centers of carpet production in the Orient, none equals Persia ( Modern-day Iran ) for its rich diversity of designs, color and weave. A Persian carpet has long been considered as the apogee of everything an exotic Oriental rug should be.
As early as the fourteenth century, fine carpet and rugs were an integral part of sophisticated Persian court life. Beautifully detailed miniatures show brightly colored geometric patterned carpets as often the sole item of furnishing. The carpets were used to decorate the floors of palaces , masques and sometimes even garden pavilions. An Italian visitor to the summer palace os Shah Abbas (1587-1629) describes an opulent open-air evening with chandeliers, soft music and rich carpets spread out for guests.
Ever since Persian rugs first made their appearance in the seventeenth-century Europe via ancient silk route and through ports on Persia's southern coast, they have been venerated as objects of great beauty and fine workmanship. Leading artists of the day such as Rubens, Vermeer, de Hooch and Van Dyck depicted Persian rugs
in their pictures. The carpets are mostly shown covering tables as it was not until seventieth century that rugs began to be widely used as floor coverings.
